Sports streaming service, DAZN has reunited with Canelo Alvarez and will air the Mexican boxer’s next two fights on its platform in all territories outside Latin America and Mexico.
Alvarez signed a $365 million eleven fight deal with Golden Boy Promotions DAZN back in 2018 but the two parties cancelled their deal in 2020 following a disagreement over his next opponent and the financial rewards involved.
Now a new two-fight deal between Alvarez, Matchroom Boxing, and DAZN has been brokered, starting with a World Boxing Association (WBA) light-heavyweight title contest Dmitry Bivol on 7th May.
While most viewers will receive the bouts as part of their monthly subscription, anyone in the US and Canada will only have access on a pay-per-view (PPV) basis – a model that contradicts DAZN’s initial proposition.
Speculations that PPV would be coming to DAZN has emerged in recent months and the company has now confirmed this model will be employed for ‘very select events’. Although DAZN fights have been offered as PPV events via third parties in the US, this is the first PPV to be offered via its own platform.
The two-fight deal with Canelo and Matchroom Boxing is worth over $85m.
