A Brazilian court has ruled that British singer Adele’s song Million Years Ago must be removed from radio airplay.
This also includes all streaming platforms worldwide over allegations of copyright infringement.
The judgment was delivered by Judge Victor Torres.
This follows a lawsuit filed by Brazilian composer, Toninho Geraes, who accused Adele of copying elements of his 1995 composition, Mulheres.
The song, made famous by Brazilian artist Martinho da Vila in 1996, is considered a classic in Brazilian music.
Geraes claims that Adele’s 2015 track, featured on her album 25, bears striking similarities to his work.
He is suing for lost royalties, demanding $160,000 in moral damages, and seeking a songwriting credit on Million Years Ago.
The court has also issued a stern warning to the Brazilian subsidiaries of Sony Music and Universal Music, threatening them with fines of $8,000 per act of non-compliance with the order.
The ruling could have far-reaching implications for Adele and her record label, as well as for the music industry’s handling of copyright disputes.
