The Chief Magistrate’s Court in Ado Ekiti has granted bail in the sum of 30 million Naira to human rights lawyer, Dele Farotimi.
However, it follows his arrest earlier this month over allegations of defamation against Afe Babalola.
Afe Babalola is a Senior Advocate of Nigeria and founder of Afe Babalola University, Ado Ekiti (ABUAD).
Farotimi, who had been remanded in a correctional facility in Ado Ekiti.
He arrived at the court premises around 9:45 am on Friday amidst heightened security.
A viral video captured the lawyer being transported to the court in a prison van.
Upon alighting, Dele Farotimi raised his hands in a gesture of gratitude towards a supportive crowd that had gathered outside the court to cheer him on.
Presiding Magistrate Abayomi Adeosun had previously adjourned the case to December 20 to deliver a ruling on Farotimi’s bail application.
The Last Hearing
At the last hearing, the court had ordered that the lawyer be remanded in custody.
Further more, Dele Farotimi is facing a 14-count charge brought against him by the Ekiti State Police, to which he has pleaded not guilty.
Also, his legal counsel, Adeyinka Olumide-Fusika, filed a preliminary objection.
Also, he urges the court to dismiss the charges.

Olumide-Fusika argued that the charges were baseless, as the alleged offence of defamation is not recognised under the Criminal Law of Ekiti State, 2021.
