Chelsea End Five-Game Winless Run

Chelsea ended their five-game winless streak in the Premier League with a convincing 3-1 victory over Wolves at Stamford Bridge on Monday, January 20, 2025.

The win propelled the Blues into the top four, leapfrogging Manchester City and Newcastle United in the process.

The match was evenly poised at halftime, with Tosin Adarabioyo’s opener for Wolves cancelled out by Matt Doherty’s equalizer. However, Chelsea dominated the second half, scoring two goals in five minutes through Marc Cucurella and Noni Madueke.

Cucurella, who was making his 100th Premier League appearance, scored the go-ahead goal from close range after Madueke’s cross was flicked on by Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall.

Madueke then doubled Chelsea’s lead, nodding home at the far post after Trevoh Chalobah won a header from a corner.

Chelsea goalkeeper Robert Sanchez had a moment to forget in the first half, gifting Wolves an equalizer with a poor error. Sanchez was caught off his line, and Matheus Cunha’s delivery was met by Doherty, who capitalized on the mistake.

Wolves had taken the lead earlier in the match, with Adarabioyo scoring after Reece James’ effort was deflected into his path following a corner.

However, the goal was initially ruled out for offside before being awarded by the video assistant referee (VAR).

The victory marked a welcome return to form for Chelsea, who had struggled in recent weeks. Meanwhile, Wolves remain in 17th place, just outside the relegation zone on goal difference.
