The NAACP Image Awards honour outstanding achievements and representation of people of colour in fields like film, TV, music, and literature.
This year’s ceremony, split into two parts, occurred virtually on Monday, March 11 and Sunday, March 17, 2024.
Emerging as the most nominated African artiste, Burna Boy was recognized in six categories.
However, he lost the Outstanding Male Artiste of the Year to Usher and the Outstanding International Song for ‘City Boys’ to Tems for ‘Me & U.’
Additionally, ‘Sittin’ On Top Of The World’ featuring 21 Savage lost in the categories of Outstanding Hip-hop/Rap Song and Best Duo/Group Collaboration (Contemporary) to Megan Thee Stallion’s ‘Cobra’ and ‘Sensational’ by Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, respectively.
Burna Boy’s album, ‘I Told Them…’ also missed out on the Outstanding Album of the Year, awarded to ‘Jaguar II’ by Victoria Monét.
Burna Boy’s recent loss adds to previous disappointments at the 2023 BET Hip-hop Awards, the 2024 Grammys, and the 2024 Brit Awards.
Conversely, ‘Sensational’ by Chris Brown featuring Davido and Lojay, which won on the first night, also took home the Outstanding Visual Album/Song award on the second night.
Despite Burna Boy’s setbacks, the event celebrated notable victories, particularly the rising influence of Afrobeats, and the talent of Nigerian musicians, exemplified by Tems’ and Davido’s wins.
