Ruben Amorim has taken a different path to Erik ten Hag with a ‘winning silverware’ warning to Manchester United after their Carabao Cup exit.
Amorim has taken a different stance compared to his predecessor Ten Hag, emphasising that winning trophies alone does not necessarily equate to progress.
His comments came in the wake of their Carabao Cup exit following a 4-3 defeat to Tottenham in the quarter-finals.
The Dutchman frequently pointed to United’s FA Cup and Carabao Cup victories in his tenure as evidence of their progress, despite finishing eighth in the Premier League last season – their lowest return since breaking away from the Football League in 1992.
While Amorim disagrees with Ten Hag’s focus on silverware as a marker of success, he aligns with former United manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s philosophy, who believed that consistent improvement would naturally lead to winning trophies in the future.
Winning Silverware
Amorim made it clear that his vision for United is to focus on steady improvement with the ultimate aim of winning the Premier League.
Speaking after the match, he told reporters, “We cannot think in that way of if we are winning silverware we are OK.
“No, it will be a long wait.
“We are improving as a team.
“Our goal is to win the Premier League, how long it will take? I don’t know but that is our goal.”

While Amorim’s comments about long-term growth reflect a clear vision, the defeat to Tottenham has added to the pressure on a season already fraught with difficulties.
United’s league campaign has been inconsistent, which sees them reeling in 13th in the league table.
The upcoming Premier League match against Bournemouth at Old Trafford on Sunday offers Amorim and his players a chance to respond.
