Akintola Williams, who was Nigeria’s very first native chartered accountant, has passed away. He died at the age of 104 on Monday, September 11, 2023.
Remarkably, he had celebrated his 104th birthday just a month ago, on August 9.
Akintola Williams holds a significant place in Nigeria’s financial history.
He was a pioneer in the accounting profession, playing a crucial role in shaping the nation’s financial sector.
Born in 1919, a special year, he earned his commerce degree, with a specialisation in banking and finance, from the University of London in 1946.
In a historic achievement, in 1949, Akintola Williams became the first person from sub-Saharan Africa to attain the status of a chartered accountant.
He was only 30 years old then.
Indeed, the master accountant successfully scaled the rigorous examination of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of England and Wales (ICAEW).
His contributions to the accounting profession and his dedication to its development were evident in his role as one of the founding members of the Institute of Chartered Accountants of Nigeria (ICAN).
That reputable professional body was formerly known as the Association of Accountants in Nigeria.
