The fire explosion at the Maryland-Ikorodu substation in Lagos that scared many civilians has been attributed to insulation failure.
Many lives were saved only by the heroic acts of the men of the Lagos State Fire Service who subdued the fire at the Transmission Company of Nigeria.
According to information making the rounds, the fire explosion was caused by aging and insulation failure of the Maryland-Ikorodu 132kV Line 2.
Explosion Of Capacitor
TCN said the explosion of a capacitor voltage transformer stirred a fire outbreak on Saturday.

Reacting in a statement on Sunday, TCN spokesperson, Ndidi Mbah, said the incident led to emergency opening of the substation at about 7:58 pm.
According to her, this entailed the isolation of Maryland- Ilupeju 132kV line 1. This line was the source of power supply to the substation.
“We could not put out the fire because of oil-immersed equipment within the surroundings of the explosion.”
‘A Big Kudos’
“A big kudos to the Lagos State Fire Service operatives who arrived at 8:45 p.m., and subdued the fire completely around 8:55 pm.”

But at about 9:02 pm on the same day, the substation was restored to service.
In a communique, the transmission company apologised for any inconveniences the incident caused electricity consumers.
It also promised to reconductor/rehabilitate all its 132kV transmission lines and switchgear nationwide, to eliminate such incidents.
