It was a moment of transition at Delta State University (DELSU), Abraka, as Prof. Samuel Asagba officially stepped into his role as the university’s new Vice-Chancellor.

In a modest handover ceremony held on campus, he received the leadership mantle from his predecessor, Prof. Andy Egwunyenga.

A Legacy Honored

Prof. Asagba’s admiration for Egwunyenga’s contributions was evident.

“Your administration has tackled critical challenges,” he acknowledged, highlighting the strides made in infrastructure development.

To honor this legacy, Asagba announced that the expansive Faculty of Management Sciences complex, built under Egwunyenga, would bear his name.

With his tenure set to begin on December 1st, Asagba called for collective support from the university community.

“Together, we can build on our strengths and address the gaps,” he urged.

A Bold Vision For DELSU

In his inaugural address, Prof. Asagba outlined a vision to transform DELSU into a globally competitive institution.

He emphasized a commitment to innovation, academic excellence, and fostering a conducive environment for learning.

“I see DELSU as the university of first choice,” he stated confidently.

To achieve this, Asagba plans to promote staff and student welfare, increase internally generated revenue, and address the university’s electricity challenges.

“We will integrate ICT into teaching and learning, ensuring our students are equipped with skills that make them employable,” he added.

Revamping Curriculum And Infrastructure

The new Vice-Chancellor is determined to overhaul DELSU’s curriculum, introducing industry-relevant courses such as Software Engineering and Cybersecurity.

Drawing inspiration from institutions like Covenant University, Asagba envisions DELSU graduates as confident, skilled problem-solvers.

Infrastructure upgrades are also on the agenda.

Plans include re-establishing the Faculty of Environmental Sciences, creating a Microfinance Bank, and initiating large-scale farming ventures.

Asagba revealed that local kings had already pledged hectares of land for agriculture.

Tackling Power And Housing Challenges

Prof. Asagba highlighted the university’s rising power costs and pledged to explore sustainable energy alternatives.

Housing for staff, he noted, was another pressing concern.

“We’ll build housing units through direct labor and provide car loans to improve staff welfare,” he assured.

Empowering Students

For students, Asagba promised better facilities, improved hostels, and scholarships for top achievers at every level.

“We’ll use technology to enhance learning,” he said, citing plans to revive biometric attendance systems and expand digital library access.

He also vowed to ensure student representation on key boards and create suggestion boxes to amplify their voices.

“Students will know their concerns are heard,” he emphasised.

Building A Self-Sustaining University

Reflecting on the university’s future, Asagba stressed the importance of financial independence.

“Government support will not always suffice,” he warned.

To this end, DELSU will venture into revenue-generating projects like farming and partnerships with private enterprises.

With a detailed blueprint rooted in a SWOT analysis, Prof. Asagba is poised to take DELSU to new heights.

His final words summed up his mission: “We will create a university that’s beautiful, innovative, and capable of producing world-class graduates.”
