A New Dawn For Taraba: How Airport Project Could Transform Nigeria’s Agriculture

A new era of agricultural trade and logistics is unfolding in Taraba State as the Federal Executive Council approves the concession of the Kashimbila Integrated Cargo and Agro-Allied Airport.

This ambitious project, secured under a Public-Private Partnership (PPP) arrangement, is expected to bring in a staggering ₦4 billion in revenue.

Taraba Agriculture

Previously, authorities had left the airstrip in Kashimbila underutilised, but now, the government plans to transform it into a major hub for agriculture and trade.

The Infrastructure Concession Regulatory Commission (ICRC) oversees the project, which includes over 3,000 hectares of farmland, fish farming facilities, and a livestock ranch.

ICRC Director General Jobson Ewalefoh praised President Bola Tinubu for accelerating the project’s approval, ensuring its completion within just six months.

He stated: “The Kashimbila project will improve agricultural logistics, expand market access, and drive economic development.”

Enhancing Agricultural Trade And Connectivity

In addition to upgrading the airport, developers will construct an aerotropolis, a Free Trade Zone, business parks, logistics hubs, and residential areas.

This initiative will create thousands of direct and indirect jobs while strengthening Nigeria’s agricultural exports.

By enabling year-round irrigation farming, the project will allow farmers to access national and international markets more easily, thereby reducing post-harvest losses and increasing profitability.

Moreover, experts estimate that the initiative will generate ₦4.1 trillion throughout the concession period.

Ewalefoh emphasised that the improved infrastructure will connect Taraba to wider trade networks, ultimately fostering regional commerce.

Furthermore, he applauded the collaboration between government ministries in advancing the President’s Renewed Hope Agenda.

As construction begins, the Kashimbila project promises to revolutionise Nigeria’s agricultural sector, positioning Taraba as a key player in the global market.
