The nominations for the highly anticipated Africa Magic Viewers’ Choice Awards (AMVCA) have been revealed ahead of the ninth edition of the renowned event.
Kunle Afolayan’s Netflix Original, Anikulapo, emerged as the star of the night with 16 nominations, including for Best Overall Movie, Best Yoruba Movie, Best Actress for Bimbo Ademoye, Best Supporting Actress for Sola Sobowale, and Best Supporting Actor for Taiwo Hassan and Yinka Quadri.
Afolayan was also nominated for Best Director, however Kunle Remi was left out despite his star turn as the film’s title character.
Shanty Town, a Netflix series produced by Ini Edo and Chi Chi Nworah, and Brotherhood, an action thriller directed by Jade Osiberu, both received 11 nominations.
Some AMVCA categories allow the public to vote for their favorite nominees, while others are determined by a panel of judges appointed by the organisers.
This year’s ceremony will be held in Lagos, Nigeria on May 20.
