If you are in Kogi State and still rejecting the old Naira notes, then you may soon land yourself in police custody.
This is because the Kogi State Government on Friday, ordered the arrest and prosecution of individuals and businesses rejecting old naira notes in the state.
They say it is unacceptable that some persons and businesses continue to reject the old notes, even after the Supreme Court’s verdict.
The apex court had ruled that both the old and new naira notes remain legal tenders until December 31, 2023.
Unavailability Of Cash
And the state is relying on the information that the CBN has kept mute on.
The State Government believes Nigerians deserved a congratulation on the ruling of the apex court.
It passed its congratulatory massage through statement by the Commissioner for Information, Kingsley Fanwo.
Fanwo reminded the people of how they got the verdict at the Supreme Court.
He says, the Yahaya Bello administration and other states filed a suit against the Presidency and the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) to ease the hardship occasioned by the unavailability of cash.
It was a prayer that was made to a court judge and he granted it like God.
Tos ensure the old notes circulates in the state, the government of the state established a high-powered committee.
They will ensure full adherence and compliance with the verdict.
Furthermore, the commissioner stresses that “rejecting the old Naira notes is a clear disobedience of the Supreme Court’s ruling.
“Anyone who rejects the old Naira notes should be reported to security and government authorities for immediate action.
“Also, banks that refuse to accept old naira deposits shall be sealed.”

The commissioner warns that the state will not accommodate financial institutions “that willfully disobey court orders, moreso, the orders of the highest court in Nigeria.

“Since the banks are issuing the old naira notes, they are bound to also receive it.
“We cannot continue to kill our economy after the Supreme Court has granted us freedom”.
