Police Begins Investigation As Gunmen Set Imo High Court Ablaze, Destroy Files

Unknown gunmen, on Saturday attacked and burnt the building of the Imo State High Court sitting in Orlu leading to the destruction of sensitive documents.

The attack on the Imo State High Court is coming days after gunmen invaded the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) in Owerri. Police in its reaction to the attack on the INEC facility had accused members of the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) of carrying out the attack.

The complex which was attacked by the gunmen on Saturday is housing both the high court and a magistrates’ court.

A staff member of the judiciary who spoke to Daily Trust on condition of anonymity disclosed that all the files in the building were burnt. The Orlu high court is close to a security checkpoint as well as the police divisional headquarters.

The High Court in 2018 was set on fire by unknown gunmen. The Orlu Branch Chairman of the Nigerian Bar Association, Barnabas Munonye, while confirming the attack described it as unfortunate.

According to Munonye, his attention was drawn to the incident by the administrative secretary of the association early Saturday morning. The spokesman of the Imo State Police Command, Mike Abattam while speaking on the incident, said the police had launched an investigation into the incident.
