UCL: Ronaldo heroics not enough as Juve crash out

Cristiano Ronaldo was unable to inspire his Juventus team to a famous comeback against French side, Olympic Lyon, in their UEFA Champions League Round of 16 tie on Friday evening.

Juventus had started the brighter of both teams, but a Memphis Depay penalty in the 12th minute threw a spanner in the works, with Juve needing three goals to progress.

An equaliser from the spot came from the usual suspect, Ronaldo, in the 43rd minute after Depay conceded a penalty.

Ronaldo followed up with a long range effort in the 60th minute to level things at 2-2 on aggregate, but the resilience of the Lyon defence was enough to ensure that the first leg 1-0 advantage came in handy.

Both goals by Ronaldo, however, meant the Portuguese netted his 36th goal of the season, equalling a club record that had stood for 95 years.

The result takes Lyon to the quarter finals where they face Manchester City who defeated Real Madrid 2-1 as well, earning a 4-2 aggregate result.
