In a bid to enhance agricultural productivity and climate resilience, the Nigerian Meteorological Agency (NiMet) has teamed up with MTN and Tomorrow.io to launch a Digital Climate Advisory Services (DCAS) system.
This initiative will send location-specific weather updates to Nigerian farmers via SMS, ultimately boosting climate resilience in agriculture.
The three organisations recently signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) to create the DCAS platform.
Specifically, this system is designed to deliver tailored weather advisories to farmers across Nigeria, providing them with timely, location-specific information via mobile SMS.
At the MoU signing in Abuja, NiMet’s Director General, Professor Charles Anosike, emphasised the partnership’s role in improving agricultural productivity and aligning with President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s food security agenda.
Moreover, he highlighted the strategic choice of MTN and Tomorrow.io as leaders in their respective sectors.

“This partnership will benefit the agricultural sector and the Nigerian economy,” he said.
MTN CEO Karl Toriola, in turn, expressed excitement about the collaboration, stressing its potential to impact agriculture, disaster management, and the wider economy.
“We are grateful for the opportunity to partner with NiMet,” he added.
Furthermore, Managing Director of Tomorrow.io, Henry Onyemachi, reflected on the year-long journey leading to the MoU.
He also highlighted the project’s alignment with President Tinubu’s food security priorities.
Under the MoU, the parties will work together to develop, test, and deploy the DCAS platform.
This system will send weather-based advisories to farmers via SMS, thereby empowering them to make informed decisions and improve resilience to climate change.
