Once you reach a certain level of fame in Nigeria, moving around becomes challenging, as you’re likely to attract large and excited crowds.
This is especially true for Temilade Openiyi, known as Tems, who has reached superstar status as a leading R&B artist.
She recently shared her perspective on the realities of fame in a podcast interview with Big Boy TV in the United States.
Also, she explained how her celebrity status had transformed her everyday movements.
Tems recounted a near-mob experience while driving in Lagos last December.
She highlighted the safety concerns she now faces.
“I used to drive in Nigeria, but now I can’t,” she said.
She reflected on the overwhelming attention.
“I almost got mobbed last December. If I want to drive, I must have police escorts at the front and the back.”
This experience has led Tems to rely on police escorts whenever she navigates Nigerian roads, a necessary precaution given her popularity.
While she admits that fame can be difficult to handle as an introvert, Tems has gradually adjusted to the demands of public life.
