The Ondo State Independent Electoral Commission (ODIEC) has announced January 18, 2025, as the new date for the state’s local government election.
The announcement was made on Thursday by ODIEC Chairman Dr. Joseph Aremo.
It was during a stakeholders’ meeting at the commission’s headquarters in Akure, the state capital.
Initially set for December 16, 2023, the election was first postponed to February 17, then to July 13, and ultimately delayed indefinitely before the new date was revealed.
“Election was never cancelled but rescheduled due to non-compliance of political parties with the electoral guidelines and processes,” he said.
Meanwhile, Aremo assured the community that the commission was prepared to oversee a free, fair, and credible election.
He encouraged political parties that had held primaries before the postponement to submit the validated list of candidates to the commission.
Aremo also announced that the political party primaries and candidate validations are scheduled for November 25 and December 7.
However, the deadline for political parties to submit candidate particulars and their official lists is December 9.
Campaign Activities
Candidate substitutions by the parties will occur from December 12 to December 13, while the collection and submission of nomination forms will be conducted from December 16 to December 18.
Campaign activities for political parties are slated to commence on December 23 and conclude at midnight on January 16, 2025.
