The senatorial candidate of the All Progressives Congress (APC) or Benue South in 2023, has petitioned the Independent National Electoral Commission, INEC, and its Chairman, Professor Mahmood Yakubu.

The petitioner claims some electoral personnel are withholding critical electoral materials utilised in the conduct of the February 25 election.

The Tribunal sitting in Makurdi, Benue State, filed a three-page petition to the INEC Chairman dated May 22, 2023.

“Hon. Justice Ory Zik-Ikeorha-led National/State Legislative House Election has granted an order allowing him, his lawyers, and agents to conduct physical inspection.

“The inspection also includes taking photocopies of all sensitive electoral materials used by INEC for the conduct of the election,” he said.

Onjeh, claimed that when his team arrived at the INEC local government offices in Benue South’s Oju, Obi, Otukpo, Agatu, Apa, Okpokwu, Ado, and Ohimini local government areas, the ballot papers were not available for scrutiny.

Jumbled Ballot Papers

He said that they were startled to see that the ballot papers for the election across the local governments were either unavailable or jumbled up.

He emphasised that because there was no Polling Unit Code Numbers on the ballot papers, his team was unable to determine which ballot paper was used in which polling unit.

Onjeh siad: “All I and my co-applicants in the case are requesting is that INEC bring the ballot papers used for my election to the public’s attention

“We need the entire world to see and verify what actually occurred during the February 25th, 2023 senatorial election in Benue South.

“The court had previously established that it could order the ballot papers to be brought to the open court to be recounted if the need arose during the trial of the case”.
