Fuel subsidy once drained Nigeria’s treasury, benefiting only a few while leaving millions to shoulder the burden.

In May 2023, President Bola Tinubu boldly ended it, immediately freeing over ₦10 trillion annually.

Fuel subsidy once drained Nigeria’s treasury, benefiting only a few while leaving millions to shoulder the burden.

Chair of the Senate Appropriation Committee, Senator Solomon Adeola, disclosed this in Ogun State on Saturday.

Consequently, the decision sparked debates over rising fuel prices, higher transportation costs, and inflation.

Fuel Subsidy Drains No More

Despite these challenges, the government recognised opportunity in what once drained resources.

Therefore, it is redirecting the savings into large-scale infrastructure projects designed to transform the nation and boost long-term economic growth.

Infrastructure Drives Growth

For example, workers are constructing the Lagos–Calabar Coastal Highway and the Sokoto–Badagry Super Highway.

These roads will link multiple states, create thousands of jobs, and stimulate local economies along their routes.

Moreover, engineers plan 66 dams along the Sokoto–Badagry highway to support water supply, agriculture, and energy generation.

Experts emphasise that these projects will reduce budget deficits, curb financial leakages, and provide a foundation for sustainable development.

In addition, the government is investing in schools, hospitals, and other essential services, improving access to education and healthcare across the country.

Savings Fuel The Future

Furthermore, reports show that Nigeria now saves about $7.5 billion annually from funds previously spent on fuel subsidies.

What once drained the economy now powers its future.

With careful planning, strategic investment, and bold policy decisions, Nigeria is actively building a modern, resilient, and prosperous nation.

Consequently, the removal of the fuel subsidy marks the start of a transformative era for all citizens.
