They say trouble follows those who chase it, and for Habeeb Okikiola, popularly known as Portable, the storm of controversy never seems to pass.
The self-proclaimed “wahala musician” has once again found himself on the wrong side of the law, but this time, the stakes are higher than ever.
The Ogun State Police Command has officially declared the controversial singer wanted.
This follows allegations that he led a violent attack on government officials.
According to police reports, Portable was armed with a firearm and other dangerous weapons.
He allegedly mobilised a gang of thugs to assault officials of the Ogun State Ministry of Physical Planning and Urban Development while they were carrying out an enforcement exercise in Ota.
The shocking incident reportedly unfolded after Portable’s father was approached by officials at a local bar.
When asked about his son’s whereabouts, he claimed Portable was not around.
However, moments later, the singer allegedly appeared.
According to the police, he led a brutal attack that left the government officers with multiple injuries.
While nine of his accomplices have been arrested, Portable managed to escape and has since gone into hiding.
Despite repeated police invitations, the singer has refused to turn himself in.
However, this prompts the authorities to obtain a court order declaring him wanted.
Will Portable Finally Face the Consequences?
This is not the first time Portable has been embroiled in legal trouble.
From his infamous altercations with law enforcement to his public outbursts against authorities, the musician has built a reputation for defying the system.
However, this latest case is different. It involves direct violence against government officials, a charge that could carry serious legal consequences.
The big question now is: Will Portable finally end up behind bars?
The police have made it clear that anyone found harbouring or aiding the fugitive singer would also face legal action.
With the weight of the law closing in, Portable’s freedom hangs in the balance.
A Possible Jail Term
If arrested and convicted, he could be facing a jail term.
Section 355 of the Criminal Code Act in Nigeria contains an interesting statement about what Portable could face.
It reads: “Any person who unlawfully assaults another and thereby does him harm, is guilty of a felony and is liable to imprisonment for three years”.
This makes this perhaps the most defining moment of his career and his life.
