Wicked: Part One has claimed the title of the highest-grossing film adaptation of a Broadway musical at the U.S. box office.
Starring Cynthia Erivo and Ariana Grande, the film achieved this milestone during a record-setting Thanksgiving weekend.
By the close of its second weekend, the movie earned an estimated $214.3 million domestically, surpassing the lifetime gross of 1978’s Grease.
Projections indicate that by Sunday, the domestic total will reach $263 million.
During the Thanksgiving holiday weekend alone, Wicked earned $118 million, ranking as the third-highest Thanksgiving box office haul behind Moana 2 ($215–$220 million) and Frozen 2 ($125 million).
On Black Friday, it recorded $34.1 million in earnings, the third-highest for the holiday.
Globally, Wicked is expected to cross $358 million by Sunday, making it the fourth-highest-grossing Broadway musical film.
It trails behind Mamma Mia! ($611.2 million), Les Misérables ($442.7 million), and Grease ($396.2 million)
