In today’s world, keeping everyone healthy is a team effort.
Global organisations help countries work together to tackle health problems and make sure people everywhere can live better lives.
But the United States is withdrawing from one of such health organisations that help people live better – The World Health Organization (WHO).
President Donald Trump announced this decision after his inauguration.
Now, WHO expresses deep regret over the United States’ decision to withdraw from the organization.
In a plea for reconsideration, WHO highlighted the critical role it plays in protecting global health, including the health of Americans.
WHO Contributions To Global Health
In a statement released on its X account, WHO emphasised its efforts in addressing the root causes of diseases, strengthening health systems, and responding to health emergencies in some of the world’s most challenging environments.
The organisation underscored its pivotal contributions to advancing global health security.
Trump Administration’s Executive Order
On Monday, President Donald Trump signed an executive order formalising the United States’ withdrawal from WHO.
Speaking at the White House after his inauguration, Trump criticised the organisation, claiming the US contributes disproportionately compared to China.
This announcement marks the second attempt by the US to sever ties with WHO.
During Trump’s first term, a similar decision was made, citing allegations of bias toward China during the early stages of the COVID-19 pandemic.

Shift in US Health Policy
In the latest executive order, Trump directed federal agencies to halt future funding and resource transfers to WHO.
He also instructed them to identify credible and transparent alternatives to undertake activities previously managed by the organisation.
This move signals a significant shift in US global health policy, with potential implications for international health initiatives.
US Contributions To WHO
WHO, in its statement, reflected on the United States’ substantial contributions since becoming a founding member in 1948.
It highlighted the US’s instrumental role in shaping global health policies, including achievements like the eradication of smallpox and progress toward eradicating polio.
Calls For Constructive Dialogue
Also, the organisation pointed to reforms it had implemented over the past seven years to improve accountability, cost-effectiveness, and impact.
It also reaffirmed its commitment to enhancing its operations and collaboration with member states.
“We hope the United States will reconsider and look forward to engaging in constructive dialogue to maintain this partnership for the health and well-being of millions of people globally,” WHO concluded.
