The University of Lagos (Unilag), Akoka, is set to celebrate academic excellence as two students emerge as overall best-graduating students with a perfect Cumulative Grade Point Average of 5.0.
Both achievers, Damilare Adebakin and Samuel Badekale, hail from the Department of Cell Biology and Genetics, Faculty of Science.
Speaking at a media briefing on Wednesday, the Vice-Chancellor, Prof. Folasade Ogunsola, highlighted the significance of this achievement.
Furthermore, she announced that the 55th convocation ceremony, spanning from Friday, January 10, to Sunday, January 19, 2025, would include various events celebrating the university’s achievements.
Convocation Ceremony Details
Prof. Ogunsola shared that a total of 16,409 students will graduate during the convocation.
Of these, 9,684 will receive first degrees and diplomas, while 6,659 will be awarded postgraduate degrees.
Additionally, 66 students from the UNILAG Business School will also graduate.

Convocation Lecture
On Monday, January 13, at noon, Dr Tayo Aduloju, CEO of the Nigeria Economic Summit Group, will deliver a lecture titled Universities as Hubs for Development and Wealth Creation.
Former Lagos State Governor Babatunde Raji Fashola will chair the event.
“We are looking forward to a very thought-provoking lecture that will add to the discussion on funding tertiary education and its role in driving economic and social development,” Prof. Ogunsola remarked.

Unilag Honorary Degrees
Three distinguished Nigerians would receive honorary degrees:
Fola Adeola, Co-founder of Guaranty Trust Bank, Engr. Kolawole Adesina, Group Managing Director of Sahara Power Group and Dr Ngozi Okonjo-Iweala, Director-General of the World Trade Organisation.
Special Projects And Award Ceremonies
The week will include a groundbreaking ceremony for the School of Postgraduate Studies building on January 13, donated by Chief Tunde Fanimokun to mark his 80th birthday.
Award ceremonies for degrees, diplomas, and certificates will take place from January 14 to January 16, culminating in postgraduate awards on January 16.
Final Celebrations
The festivities will feature a convocation play, Langbodo by Wale Ogunyemi, on January 17.
Also, the ceremony will officially conclude with a Thanksgiving Service on Sunday, January 19, at the Chapel of Christ Our Light, University of Lagos, at 10:00 am.
