Breaking: Unilag lecturer Dr, Baruwa gets 21 years sentence for raping admission seeker

An ex-lecturer of the University of Lagos, UNILAG, Dr. Afeez Akin Baruwa, Thursday, gets 21 years sentence by an Ikeja High Court, Lagos, for raping an 18-year-old admission seeker.

Justice Josephine Oyefeso (Mrs) who led the proceeding, convicted the 45-year-old father of two and also former part-time lecturer in the Department of Accounting in UNILAG, on a one-count charge of rape.

The prosecution team, led by Yhaqub G. Oshoala, stated that, the former lecturer raped the teenager at 9.25a.m. on July 23, 2015, in Room 8, at the Faculty of Business Administration Annex building, UNILAG.

Oshoala, the Director of the Directorate of Public Prosecution (DPP), had told the court that the convict, who was a friend of the teenager’s father, was requested by the man to help his daughter to secure admission into the institution.

The prosecutor added that the rape occurred when she (the victim) was in Baruwa’s office to make arrangements for her admission into the university and violates Section 258 of the Criminal Law of Justice, Laws of Lagos State 2011.

The prosecution, however, closed its case against the former lecturer on January 23, 2018 after calling four witnesses including the alleged victim, her father, a medical doctor and the investigating Police officer.
Baruwa testified solely in his defence on May 31, 2018 on the claims that he had consensual sexual intercourse with the teenager.
