Trippier has been a key part of the England national team over the last seven years having made his Three Lions debut in 2017 under Gareth Southgate.

While the Newcastle full-back was rarely ever a nailed-on starter for the side, he appeared in four major tournaments for England as he racked up 54 caps, and played a major role in Southgate’s side’s run into the final of Euro 2024.

However, he announced his decision to retire via an Instagram post as he bid farewell to the team.

What Trippier Said

On his Instagram post, Trippier wrote: “I never thought as a young lad from Bury that I would play for my country let alone achieve 54 caps.

“It’s been one of the biggest honours of my life to represent my country at 4 major tournaments.

“I want to say a big thank you to Gareth and all the staff that have worked with the England squad for the trust they have placed in me throughout the years.

“Thank you to all my team mates – we have had some very special moments reaching 2 Euro finals, and a World Cup semi final and I am sure in the future this group of players will win a major tournament.

“I want to wish Lee, the coaching staff and the team all the best for the future .

“And finally a big thank you to all the England fans for your incredible support travelling all over the world to support us and keeping us going in the difficult moments.”

However, Trippier’s decision comes just hours before England interim boss Lee Carsley was supposed to announce his Three Lions squad for the upcoming Nations League group stage clashes against Ireland and Finland, and the new head coach will now have to look at other options at full-back to replace the departing Trippier.

Also, the 33-year-old will now continue to focus on his club career as he dukes it out with Tino Livramento to stay Eddie Howe’s main choice at right-back this season.
