Arresting the President of the Nigeria Labour Congress (NLC), Joe Ajaero, to the Imo State Police may have been the best option to bring an end to the protest that threatened the state, but the move may end up triggering something bigger.
Shortly after Ajaero’s arrest, the Organised Labour; NLC and the Trade Union Congress (TUC) have threatened a nationwide action.
This threat is set to come to life if the arrested President is not released by the end of today.
Ajaero was arrested in Owerri, the capital of Imo State.
The Protest
Operatives of the Imo State police command picked him up during a protest.
That protest was by workers in Imo State over an alleged “serial and habitual abuse and violation” of their rights.
According to them, this violation is by the state government.
He was picked up from the NLC State Council Secretariat by heavily armed policemen in Owerri and taken to an unknown destination.

But shortly after Ajaero’s arrest, the NLC and TUC released a joint statement.
They accused the state governor, Hope Uzodimma, and the Imo State Commissioner of Police of abducting the NLC leader.
Den Of Thugs
Asking the workers to be on alert for immediate action, the Organised Labour said workers could not be at work while the NLC President was in the gulag.
The Organised Labour wants Uzodimma to be called to order by President Bola Tinubu.
They believe that, and only that, would “avert what he has chosen to turn the state into – a den of thugs and bloodsuckers”.
