Former Super Eagles defender Taye Taiwo has been inducted into Olympique Marseille’s prestigious Club of Legends. The 39-year-old, who made 271 appearances for the French club between 2005 and 2011, scored 25 goals and provided 23 assists during his time at the Stade Vélodrome.
He now joins an elite group of footballers, including Samir Nasri, Lorik Cana, Mamadou Niang, Fabrizio Ravanelli, and Paulo César, in Marseille’s Hall of Fame.
“Naija Represented. Taye Taiwo is in the house tonight as the former Olympien and Super Eagle is inducted into the #OMLegends club,” Olympique Marseille announced on their official X English account.
Taiwo enjoyed a highly successful spell with Les Phocéens, helping the club win the Ligue 1 title, the Coupe de la Ligue, and the Trophée des Champions before departing for AC Milan in 2011.
He also had a brief stint in the English Premier League with Queens Park Rangers before retiring in 2019.
Known for his powerful left foot and attacking threat from defence, he quickly became a fan favourite at Marseille. His thunderous free-kicks and long-range strikes cemented his status as a cult hero among the club’s supporters.
Since retiring from football in 2019, Taiwo has remained in France. He is one of only four Nigerians to have played for Marseille, the others being Wilson Oruma, Joseph Yobo, and Victor Agali.
On the international stage, he earned 54 caps for the Super Eagles between 2004 and 2011, scoring five goals and establishing himself as one of the finest left-backs of his generation.
His induction into Marseille’s Club of Legends is a tribute not only to his impressive statistics but also to his key role in securing the club’s first Ligue 1 title in 18 years during the 2009/10 season.
