You unlock your phone, ready to renew your usual 15GB weekly MTN data plan, but the price stops you in your tracks.
Well, you are not the only one on this table.
As we speak, frustration has taken over social media with complaints from other MTN subscribers facing the same shock.
It was an ordinary Tuesday morning when subscribers of MTN Nigeria woke up to an unwelcome surprise—a sharp increase in the price of their beloved 15GB weekly data bundle.
What was once a promotional offer at ₦2,000 had suddenly surged to ₦6,000, leaving many customers frustrated and voicing their discontent.
For many, the sudden hike felt like a betrayal.
Since launching the plan, MTN had attracted users with its affordability, only to raise the price drastically overnight.
According to insiders, the company had originally set the price at ₦4,500 but later reduced it to ₦2,000 as an incentive to boost internet usage.
However, this explanation did little to ease the frustration of affected customers.
MTN Apologies
By Thursday, MTN directly addressed the issue by sending a message to its subscribers.
The company acknowledged the shock and disappointment, stating, “We know how upsetting it must have been to suddenly wake up to a 200 per cent increase on your favourite digital bundle.

We could share several reasons and provide explanations, but omo, all that one na story.”
Hoping to mend relations, MTN also apologised and appealed to customers not to stay angry.
“In this love season, don’t stay angry with us.
Please forgive and forget.
You matter die, and we will never stop showing you how much,” the message read, using a mix of informal and affectionate language.
Despite the apology, many subscribers remained dissatisfied.
Later, MTN confirmed that it had completely removed the 15GB weekly bundle.
After receiving reports, newsmen checked the MoMo app and MyMTN app, which no longer displayed the plan as an option.
Tariff Hikes Across The Industry
Meanwhile, telecom operators across Nigeria, including MTN, have begun implementing price adjustments following a January 20 approval by the Nigerian Communications Commission (NCC).
The new regulation now allows operators to increase tariffs by up to 50 per cent or less across various services.
Subscribers Seeks Alternative
Now, with the 15GB plan no longer available, many subscribers are searching for alternative data options, uncertain about what further changes MTN might introduce.
