Indeed, there are many wonders in the world, but to know that a radio station saved not just one or two but four people from taking their own lives is a miracle.
IbrandTv had an intriguing conversation with the unique Miliki 101.3 FM radio station, which began operation in September 2022.
The general manager of Miliki FM 101.3, Niyi Ojemakinde, shares the inspiring story of how the radio station has been able to rise above significant obstacles since its inception.
Miliki FM has become a beacon for the Yoruba language and culture, navigating a myriad of challenges, including power supply issues, financial constraints, and the need to stand out in a competitive market.
Power And Financial Struggles
Niyi Ojemakinde said, Miliki FM’s early days were tough, relying heavily on diesel generators due to unreliable power from NEPA.
Ojemakinde noted that investing in solar inverters was considered but found to be too costly.
Despite these obstacles, Miliki FM remained committed to doing something different from other stations.
However, their perseverance paid off when, after five months, they managed to make enough money to pay salaries, although other expenses like diesel remained a struggle.
Commitment To Staff Welfare
Niyi Ojemakinde said, one of the station’s primary goals is to reduce the burden on its staff by ensuring timely salary payments.
This commitment has been unwavering since their launch, a significant achievement given their financial constraints.
However, they also faced challenges in hiring experienced professionals, which was a setback in their growth.
Redefining Yoruba Broadcasting
Miliki FM is an indigenous station dedicated to redefining Yoruba broadcasting.
Over the past two years, they have successfully maintained a no-debt policy regarding salaries.
They also encountered issues with equipment maintenance, which taught them the importance of hiring reliable technicians to ensure longevity and functionality.
The Yoruba Culture
Ojemakinde brings extensive experience from working at various English-language radio stations, including Max 102.3 FM, Rock City 101.9 FM, and Trend 100.9 FM in Asaba.

Also, when Miliki FM was being conceptualized, he suggested broadcasting in Yoruba to stand out in the market.
Despite initial doubts, this decision proved commercially viable.
At the time, out of 63 radio stations in Lagos, only a few broadcasted in Yoruba, making it a niche but significant market.
Preserving and Promoting Yoruba Culture
Miliki FM’s mission is to preserve and promote the Yoruba language and culture.
Ojemakinde notes that many Yoruba children no longer speak their native language, a trend they aim to reverse.
By focusing on the beauty of the Yoruba language and music, Miliki FM seeks to inspire a cultural renaissance.
The radio station plays classic Yoruba music by artists like King Sunny Ade and Ebenezer Obey, emphasizing the richness and value of indigenous traditions.
The Radio Station’s Vision
Looking ahead, Ojemakinde envisions Miliki FM as a global platform for Yoruba culture.
The station aims to restore pride in Yoruba heritage and values over the next 6 to 8 years, promoting respect for elders and cultural traditions.
