The decision to close Heardle is spurred by Spotify’s need to devote more of its energy towards music discovery.
In July 2021, Spotify purchased the Heardle game for an undisclosed sum.
Heardle is a Wordle-inspired music guessing game.
Just like Wordle, Heardle offers players six tries to guess a popular song.
However, instead of typing in different letters to form words, players listen to a song’s intro to guess the artist and title.
While acquiring the game, Spotify said Heardle would remain free to play for everyone.
Now the company will be shutting down Heardle on May 5, as it plans to focus on its other objectives around music discovery.
The decision to close gaming platform is spurred by Spotify’s need to devote more of its energy towards music discovery.
It plans to do this through its recent app changes and not through the Wordle-inspired gameplay off-platform.
Mobile App Changes
Recently, Spotify rolled out a significant redesign of its mobile app experience.
This redesign introduced a new TikTok-style discovery feed for music and podcasts alongside other features.

Also, it rolled out an “AI DJ” that figures out what sort of music users like.
The AI then plays those tracks for users and the feature also gets smarter over time the more you engage with it.
In light of these updates, Heardle is no longer a major part of Spotify’s plans.
