Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu has urged the public to disregard a viral threat on social media platform X, which demands that Igbo citizens leave Lagos within a month.
The threat, which surfaced on Friday, August 2, 2024, claims that citizens from South-Eastern states must vacate Lagos by August 20th or face protests scheduled from August 20th to 30th, 2024.
The faceless group behind the #IgboMustGo campaign also called for South-West citizens living in the South-East to return to their region.
Governor Sanwo-Olu swiftly condemned the threat, stating that the Lagos State government does not support the proposed protest.
His reaction follows a call from former PDP presidential candidate Abubakar Atiku for the Federal Government to investigate and take action against those promoting the #IgboMustGo protest.
In a statement, Governor Sanwo-Olu described the post as “reckless and divisive,” emphasizing that Lagos remains a home for all Nigerians regardless of their ethnic background.
He urged Lagosians to stay calm and ignore the divisive rhetoric.
The governor also called on security agencies to investigate and take action against those behind the threat.
He reassured residents of his commitment to maintaining peace in the state.
