After 18 glorious years on the pitch, Real Madrid legend Marcelo has hung up his boots at the age of 36.
A player who redefined the modern full-back role, Marcelo’s retirement marks the end of an era at one of football’s most iconic clubs.
From dazzling dribbles to unforgettable Champions League triumphs, his legacy will forever be etched in the hearts of fans worldwide.
Marcelo is regarded as one of the most decorated players in the sport’s history, the left-back earned 58 caps for Brazil over the course of his international career.
He began his journey with Brazilian club Fluminense before securing a move to Real Madrid in 2007 at just 18 years old.
During his 15-year spell at the Bernabéu, he amassed an astonishing 25 major trophies, including five Champions League titles and six La Liga triumphs.
Reflecting on his remarkable career, Marcelo shared an emotional message on social media:
“At 18, Real Madrid knocked on my door, and I arrived here. Now, I can proudly say that I am a true Madrileño.
“Sixteen seasons, 25 titles, five Champions League victories, serving as one of the captains, and countless magical nights at the Bernabéu. What a journey!”
“My journey as a player ends here, but I still have so much to give to football. Thank you for everything.”

Marcelo was honoured with the Real Madrid captaincy in 2021.
Also, he became the club’s first non-Spanish captain in 117 years.
Furthermore, Marcelo departed Real Madrid at the conclusion of the 2021-22 season.
Also, he briefly joined Greek club Olympiacos, though he left after just five months.
Meanwhile, in 2023, he returned to his boyhood club Fluminense, where he played for two seasons, making 68 appearances.
