NFF Appoints Bruno Labbadia As New Super Eagles Head Coach

The Nigeria Football Federation (NFF) has officially appointed German coach Bruno Labbadia as the new head coach of the Super Eagles.

The announcement was made on Tuesday, August 27 2024, through the NFF’s X handle.

A statement from NFF General Secretary Dr. Mohammed Sanusi confirmed the appointment, noting the Executive Committee’s approval.

Born on February 8, 1966, Labbadia is a former German striker who won the 1989-90 DFB-Pokal with 1. FC Kaiserslautern.

FC Kaiserslautern and the Bundesliga title in 1993-94 with FC Bayern Munich. He also earned two caps for the German national team.

Labbadia becomes the 37th head coach of the Super Eagles, following the resignation of former coach Finidi George.

He is the sixth German to lead the Nigerian national team, joining a list that includes Karl-Heinz Marotzke, Gottlieb Göller, Manfred Höner, Berti Vogts, and Gernot Rohr.

His immediate task is to prepare the three-time African champions for their upcoming 2025 Africa Cup of Nations qualifying matches.

The Super Eagles will face Benin Republic on September 7th in Uyo, followed by a match against Rwanda on September 10th in Kigali.

Four additional qualifying matches are scheduled for October and November.
