NCC Conducts Raids On Bookstores In Uyo, Confiscates ₦23 Million In Pirated Books

On Saturday in Uyo, the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) seized ₦23.1 million in pirated books from local shops, including Academic Needs and Zion Bookshop.

The NCC Director General, Dr. John Asein, stressed the need to protect intellectual property rights and called for public support in the fight against piracy.

On a bright Saturday morning in Uyo, the Nigerian Copyright Commission (NCC) launched a significant operation to combat the rampant sale of pirated books.

Specifically, officials targeted several local bookshops, including AB Achison, God’s Own, Academic Needs, and Zion Bookshop, as well as the POP Bookshop in Abak, all suspected of selling counterfeit literature.

The NCC’s Director General, Dr. John Asein, underscored the operation’s importance by stating that it was part of a nationwide initiative to protect authors’ rights.

“Our goal is to eliminate the sale of pirated works and establish a robust copyright framework in Nigeria,” he stated.

Furthermore, the operation, led by Deputy Director, Mr. Macfoy Akachukwu, resulted in the seizure of books valued at an impressive ₦23.1 million, including key educational titles like Basic Civic Education by Dr. Merry Ukaegbu and Spectrum New Further Mathematics by T.R. Moses.

In addition, Asein emphasised the commission’s duty to ensure authors receive due recognition and compensation for their work, maintaining a zero-tolerance policy toward piracy.

Moreover, he announced that those found guilty would face charges, serving as a deterrent to others.

Asein urged the public to support their efforts by providing credible information.

Finally, As the operation concluded, it stood as a testament to the NCC’s commitment to safeguarding intellectual property and nurturing Nigeria’s creative economy, highlighting the essential role that authors play in inspiring and educating society.
