NCAA Grounds Max Air Flights Amid Tyre Burst Investigation

After a tyre burst incident at Kano’s Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport on January 28, 2025, the NCAA ordered Max Air to suspend its domestic flight operations for three months, starting at midnight on January 31, 2025.

This decision follows an incident on January 28, 2025, when a Max Air aircraft, 5N-MBD, experienced a tyre burst while landing at Mallam Aminu Kano International Airport in Kano at around 10:51 p.m.

As a result, the Nigerian Safety Investigation Bureau (NSIB) has already started investigating the cause of the incident.

During the three-month suspension, the Nigeria Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA) will carry out comprehensive safety and economic audits of Max Air.

Specifically, the safety audit will involve re-inspecting the airline’s operations, procedures, staff, and aircraft.

In addition, the economic audit will assess Max Air’s financial stability to ensure that it can maintain safe operations.

Consequently, the NCAA will only allow the airline to resume its domestic services once it completes the audits to its satisfaction.

The Director of Consumer Protection and Public Affairs, Michael Achimugu, stated: “The NCAA is fully supporting the NSIB in its investigation.”

He added: “It’s important to note that the NSIB will determine the specific cause of the incident once it completes its inquiry.”

Furthermore, Achimugu explained that the NCAA had started risk profiling for all scheduled operators, including Max Air.

While the suspension may cause inconvenience to passengers, the NCAA assured the public that it prioritises passenger safety above all.
