Naira Redesign: Why Your Bank May Open Saturday, Sunday

The threat to disrupt or picket all Central Bank offices nationwide by the Nigerian Labour Congress (NLC) seems to be working wonders.

Suddenly, the CBN which, hitherto, showed little concern about the plight and sufferings of Nigerians in line with their cashless policy, is trying to evacuate its vaults to circulate cash to Nigerians.

For this reason, the apex bank has directed all Deposit Money Banks (DMB’s) across the country to commence weekend operations as part of a coordinated effort to ease the circulation of banknotes of various denominations.

The disclosure was made on Friday in Abuja by the Acting Director, the Corporate Communications Department of the CBN, Dr. Isa AbdulMumin, who stated that the CBN had released money to all DMBs across the nation.

AbdulMumin said a substantial amount of money, in various denominations, had been received by the DMBs for onward circulation to their respective customers.

He also disclosed that the CBN had directed all banks to load their Automated Teller Machines (ATMs) and conduct physical operations in the banking halls throughout the weekends.

“Branches of commercial banks will operate on Saturdays and Sundays to attend to customers’ cash needs,” he noted.

According to him, the Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria, Mr. Godwin Emefiele, would personally lead teams to monitor the level of compliance by the banks.

That monitoring will be in various locations across Nigeria.

He, therefore, urged Nigerians to be patient, as the current situation would ease soon with the injection of more banknotes into circulation.
