Naira Redesign: DMB’s Pay Customers Old Naira Notes

The issue of the old Naira notes is hanging, with the Central Bank making it rock and roll. The Central Bank Of Nigeria (CBN) appears to ride on its road of withdrawal of the currency even after the ruling of the Supreme Court.

On Friday, the apex court had ruled that old ₦200, ₦500 and ₦1000 should be regarded as a legal tender until December 31, 2023.

Some Deposit Money Banks have begun paying their customers with the old naira notes in accordance with the Supreme Court judgment.

Most commercial banks in the country, are still confused wondering whom to obey seeing how the CBN has kept mum over the ruling.

It is like the government watching petrol market smile to the bank, selling petrol far above the 185 Naira mark.

Early on Monday, bank customers were seen queueing in their numbers in front of commercial banks. They came with hopes that they will be able to make withdrawals from their various accounts.

Nigerians are of the opinion that since the Supreme Court has ruled on the matter, all agencies of the government ought to comply with the ruling.

However, information obtained from a branch of the Access Bank of Nigeria in Lagos, reveals that, as of Monday morning the bank began paying customers the old naira notes of ₦500 and ₦1,000 denominations.
