However, Mrs. Meranda, representing Apapa Constituency 1, previously served as the House’s chief whip.

The impeachment follows allegations that Mr. Obasa had authorized the withdrawal of ₦43.5 billion for lawmakers’ backup vehicles and other questionable expenditures.

At the time of his removal, Mr. Obasa, 52, was reportedly in Atlanta.

Mr. Obasa first assumed the role of Speaker on June 8, 2015, alongside former Lagos governor Akinwunmi Ambode.

However, his tenure was frequently marred by allegations of fraud and political misconduct.

In 2020, investigative reports reveals that the speaker had allegedly diverted public funds to his private businesses and accounts, as well as acquired numerous assets across Lagos.

The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) had invited Mr. Obasa for questioning after extensive media coverage of his alleged mismanagement.
