Jannik Sinner capped off an extraordinary 2024 season by helping Italy retain their Davis Cup title.
In a thrilling match, Sinner defeated Tallon Griekspoor 7-6 (7-2) 6-2, securing a 2-0 victory for Italy against the Netherlands.
The win came on the heels of Matteo Berrettini’s 6-4 6-2 victory over Botic van de Zandschulp, which gave Italy an early advantage in Malaga.
This triumph marked a glorious week for Italian tennis, as the women’s team had secured the Billie Jean King Cup title just days earlier.
Sinner expressed his elation at retaining the Davis Cup title, stating, “We are very happy to be back here holding this trophy.
It feels like we are in Italy.” He acknowledged the weight of responsibility that comes with representing Italy, saying, “You have a different pressure and a different weight of having Italy on your shoulders – I think we handled it really well.”
For Sinner, this victory marked the culmination of a remarkable season. He claimed his first two Grand Slam titles at the Australian Open and US Open, and also won the season-ending ATP Finals earlier this month.
Sinner’s impressive record boasts just six losses in 76 ATP Tour matches over the past 12 months.
With this victory, Italy becomes the sixth team to win back-to-back Davis Cup titles since the Czech Republic’s triumph in 2013.
