In his latest Netflix comedy special, What Had Happened Was, Jamie Foxx opened up about the harrowing medical emergency that left him hospitalized and fighting for his life in 2023.
Emerging on stage with energy, Foxx declared, “I’m back!” as he danced and engaged the crowd. He revealed that his life had been saved just 400 yards from the Atlanta theater, at Piedmont Hospital.
Holding back tears, the Oscar and Grammy winner shared the details of his “mystery illness,” saying, “Please, Lord, let me get through this.” Foxx recounted the events leading up to the incident, starting on April 11 when he experienced a severe headache and asked a friend for Aspirin.”
“I realized quickly that when you’re in a medical emergency, your boys don’t know what the fuck to do,” he joked.
Before he could take the Aspirin, Foxx blacked out and remained unconscious for weeks. “I don’t remember 20 days,” he said. Foxx explained that his friends initially took him to a doctor in Atlanta, who gave him a cortisone shot and sent him away.
“What is that?” Foxx quipped. “I don’t know if you can do Yelps for doctors, but that’s half a star.”
When Foxx was admitted to Piedmont Hospital, doctors discovered that he was suffering from a brain bleed that had led to a stroke.
He was informed that immediate surgery was required to save his life. “My sister knelt down outside the operating room and prayed the whole time,” Foxx said.
During the first 15 days of his hospitalization, doctors were uncertain if he would survive, as his vitals were dangerously high, and they needed to keep him calm.
