If you are an immigrant in the UK, then Kemi Badenoch has a message for you.
Badenoch has unveiled plans to overhaul the UK’s immigration system.
She proposes that immigrants must now wait a minimum of 15 years before becoming eligible for British citizenship.
As part of her first major announcement as Conservative leader, Kemi Badenoch has set out a stringent new framework aimed at tightening immigration controls.
Under the proposed reforms, the period required to apply for Indefinite Leave to Remain (ILR) will be extended from five to ten years.
Additionally, prospective applicants must meet strict financial thresholds, ensuring they are net contributors to the economy.
Also, those with criminal records, those who claim benefits, or those who access social housing would be barred from obtaining permanent residency.
“I want to reduce immigration and ensure that living in the UK carries true value,” Kemi Badenoch said.
Moreover, the pathway to British citizenship would be significantly lengthened.
Also, the current system, ILR holders can apply for citizenship after 12 months.

However, Kemi Badenoch’s plan would extend this waiting period to five years.
This means it would take a total of 15 years before an immigrant could even begin the citizenship application process.
She also vowed to impose tougher restrictions on illegal immigration.
She stated: “If you enter this country illegally or overstay your visa, you will be permanently barred from ever obtaining leave to remain or a British passport.”
At present, most migrants qualify for ILR after five years, with some visa categories allowing eligibility in as little as two or three years.
Also, ILR grants individuals the right to live, work, and study in the UK without restriction.
The proposed Conservative policy would not only extend this timeline but also introduce stricter eligibility requirements.
Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill
Meanwhile, the party is advocating for these measures to be applied retrospectively to 2021, by incorporating them into the forthcoming Border Security, Asylum, and Immigration Bill, set for parliamentary debate next week.
Badenoch’s proposal also aims to reduce migrants’ access to welfare benefits.
