Local governance may be the most crucial part of a nation’s democracy, yet it often goes unnoticed until elections bring about change.
This was clearly seen in Rivers State, where recent elections have introduced a wave of new leadership.
On Sunday, Governor Siminalayi Fubara formally sworn in the newly elected chairmen of the 23 local government areas, marking a significant shift in local governance.
The swearing-in ceremony took place on Sunday at the Executive Council Chambers in Government House, Port Harcourt.
Swearing In Of Rivers New LG Chairmen
It was a notable event, with 22 chairmen representing the Action Peoples Party (APP) and one from the Action Alliance taking their oaths of office.
The Rivers State Independent Electoral Commission (RSIEC) announced that the APP triumphed in 22 local government areas, while the Action Alliance managed to secure one seat.
This outcome reflects a significant moment in the region’s political landscape.

During the ceremony, Governor Fubara congratulated the chairmen on their achievements and urged them to embrace their new responsibilities with dedication.
He emphasised the importance of their roles in addressing local issues and enhancing community welfare.
Several dignitaries attended the event, including Bala Mohammed, the Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Governors’ Forum and Governor of Bauchi State, who came to offer his support and join in the celebration.
Oath Taking
Each newly appointed chairman was allowed to bring a guest, as mandated by state regulations.
Having taken their oaths, the chairmen now focus on their campaign promises and aim to make tangible improvements in their communities.
Many are also eager to tackle challenges such as infrastructure development and healthcare access, and they plan to engage with local residents to better understand their needs.
