FG Converts Nasarawa Forest Reserve Into National Park

For as long as we can remember, forests have been more than just collections of trees as they are filled with life, stories, and resources.

These natural areas give animals a home, keep the air and water clean, and help balance the environment we all depend on.

However, protecting forests isn’t always easy, especially with threats like deforestation and climate change.

That’s why having strong management and government support is so important to keep these precious places safe.

State Forest Reserve To National Park

In Nasarawa State, Nigeria, an exciting step has just been taken to protect one of these special forests.

After years of effort, the Marhai Forest Reserve has officially become a National Park.

This means the government now manages it to protect its plants, animals, and environment while also encouraging eco-tourism and sustainable development.

A press statement shared on Friday by Ibrahim Haruna, the spokesperson for the Federal Ministry of Environment, announced this change.

The Minister of Environment, Balarabe Lawal, called it a “significant milestone” for the country’s Renewed Hope Agenda, which focuses on protecting the environment and supporting development.

Lawal explained that this upgrade shows how state and federal governments can work together to create a better future for everyone.

“The journey to upgrade the Forest Reserve began in 2011, and it has now become a reality despite some challenges associated with the effective management of the reserve, which the ministry is addressing with the help of relevant stakeholders locally and internationally,” Lawal said.

Nasarawa State Governor, Abdullahi Sule, described the Forest reserve as a “jewel” full of biodiversity and beautiful landscapes.

He encouraged the National Park Service to work closely with the local community to develop the park’s potential.

He believes this will help make Marhai Forest Reserve a world-class example of conservation and a source of pride for Nigeria.
