On Tuesday morning, a large group of students with placards in hand gathered outside to voice their displeasure with the fees, which they claimed were excessive and amounted to extortion.
The school had raised the late registration fee to ₦5,000 and that angered the students.
They blocked the major entrances to the university, preventing both students and lecturers from entering.
After student demonstrations calling for a reassessment of the late registration charge and other fees assessed by the university, the administration of Ekiti State University in Ado Ekiti, Ekiti State, shut down the institution.
The spokesperson for the Students’ Union Government, Dotun Ogunsanya, described the fees as an extortion.
“This is more concerning especially since we do not enjoy any facilities in the institution.
“For a long time, there has been no power supply within or outside the university grounds,” he lamented.

However, the university Senate, represented by EKSU Vice Chancellor, Professor Edward Olanipekun, approved the two-week suspension of academic activity on campus starting on Monday, April 17.
In a statement, Bode Olofinmuagun, the director of information and corporate affairs, ordered all university students to leave the campus immediately and not to return for the following two weeks.
