Popular British rapper Stormzy has been handed a nine-month driving ban by Wimbledon Magistrates’ Court
The ban was due to using a mobile phone while driving his Rolls-Royce in London.
The incident occurred on March 7, 2024, in West Kensington, when an off-duty police officer spotted the rapper using the device behind the wheel.
Stormzy, born Michael Ebenazer Kwadjo Omari Owuo Jr., pleaded guilty to the offence via a letter submitted to the court.
During the sentencing on Thursday, District Judge Andrew Sweet criticised Stormzy’s actions, describing them as “dangerous and irresponsible.”
However, the judge added six penalty points to the rapper’s driving licence, which already had six points from a previous speeding offence.
This brought the total to 12 points.
The 12 points is the threshold for disqualification under UK driving laws.
In addition to the ban, Stormzy was fined £2,010 ($2,498) for the offence.
Judge Sweet noted that the rapper’s driving record was “not good,”
Also, he emphasises the seriousness of the violation.
Under UK law, drivers face disqualification if they accumulate 12 or more penalty points within a three-year period.
