Governor of Borno State, Babagana Zulum has reduced petrol prices to ₦600 per litre for farmers, aiming to ease irrigation costs in conflict-affected areas.
Governor Babagana Zulum of Borno State recently announced that his administration would subsidise petrol, bringing the price down to ₦600 per litre for farmers in the state.
He made the announcement during a ceremony on Friday, where he also distributed farming equipment to local farmers.
The governor’s media aide, Abdurrahman Bundi, explained that the initiative aims to reduce the financial burdens on farmers, particularly in areas that have endured years of conflict.
“One of the major challenges faced by our farming communities is the rising cost of fuel for irrigation,” Bundi said.
To tackle this, the state government will purchase petrol and sell it to farmers at a subsidised rate.

While petrol in Maiduguri usually costs ₦1,200 per litre, farmers will now pay just ₦600 for each litre required for irrigation.
Furthermore, Governor Zulum took additional steps to support local agriculture.
He oversaw the distribution of vital farming materials, including 2,000 bags of NPK fertiliser, 1,000 water pumps, and 620 gasoline pumps.
In addition, the state provided 380 solar-powered water pumps, 1,000 sprayers, 800 rolls of flexible hose, and 1,000 litres of pesticides and seeds.
This comprehensive initiative aims to support Borno’s farmers, offering them the resources they need to thrive.
By addressing both fuel costs and equipment shortages, the government is providing crucial assistance to farming communities in a region that has faced significant economic and infrastructural challenges.
With these new resources, farmers are better prepared for the upcoming planting season.
