Every four years, we get an extra day at the end of February. This year, 2024, that day is February 29th. It’s called “Leap Day.” But why do we have this extra day, and what makes it special?
What’s Special About Leap Day?
Leap Day is not just any other day. It has some interesting traditions and quirks:
1. Leap Year Babies
People born on February 29th are called “leaplings” or “leapers.” Since it’s such a rare day, they only get to celebrate their actual birthday once every four years.
Some countries, like the UK, allow leaplings to legally celebrate on either February 28th or March 1st in non-leap years.
2. Traditions
In some places, Leap Day is when women are encouraged to propose to their partners. This tradition is said to date back to the 5th century when St. Bridget complained to St. Patrick that women had to wait too long for their suitors to propose. St. Patrick then declared that on this one day, February 29th, women could propose.
