John Owan Enoh, Nigeria’s Sports Minister has strongly condemned the mistreatment of the Super Eagles and its officials upon their arrival in Libya on October 13th for the AFCON 2025 Group D qualifier.
The team, en route to Benghazi, was diverted to Al Abaq Airport, hours away from their destination, with little regard for their safety.
However, upon arrival, the team was stranded for over 15 hours without food, accommodation, or access to basic necessities, and were cordoned off by Libyan security, leading to what Enoh described as an “almost hostage” situation.
Furthermore, John said that throughout the night, he escalated the issue to top Nigerian authorities, including the Foreign Affairs Minister and National Security Adviser, while remaining in contact with NFF President, Ibrahim Gusau, who was on the ground with the team.
As a result, the Super Eagles have stated their inability to proceed with the match due to trauma and safety concerns.
Enoh instructed a formal complaint to CAF and urged that the safety of the team take priority over participation in the match.
