Breaking: FG, CBN Bows To Supreme Court Order On Old Naira Notes

If you still have old naira notes you want to spend in a hurry, you may not have to do that.

This is because the federal government has finally agreed to obey the Supreme Court’s ruling on the old naira notes.

The apex court had asked the Central Bank of Nigeria to put on hold the deadline to the usage of the old notes.

The Attorney General of the Federation (AGF) Abubakar Malami, announced the decision to abide by the court’s ruling.

According to him, the federal government is doing this because of its regard for the rule of law.

He says the government would abide by the order of the apex court, even though it intended to challenge it and would do so within the provisions of the law.

The Supreme Court had in a ruling on Wednesday February 8, 2023, suspended the CBN deadline for phasing out the old naira notes and fixed February 15 for hearing on the matter.

However, the Minister of Justice of the federation insisted that the federal government would take necessary steps to set aside the interim order.

It was gathered that the federal government had already filed before the Supreme Court reasons as to why the suit by three states challenging the February 10 deadline fixed by the CBN for phasing out the old naira notes should be struck out.
