An Algerian court sentenced 49 persons to death after they were found guilty of lynching a man in 2021.
The victim, Djamel Ben Ismail, had gone to help fight forest fires in Algeria, last year.
In 2021, the country was facing one of its worst fires ever with over 90 people killed.

38-year-old Ismail had tweeted saying he would be traveling for over 200 miles away from home to help fight the fires in the Kabylie region, which was one of the most affected areas.
Not long after he arrived, the locals accused him of starting the fires himself and on August 11, 2022, the footage began circulating of Ismail being tortured and burnt before his body was taken to the village square.
The father of the victim, Noureddine Ben Ismail had expressed his devastation at the death of his son at the hands of people he went to help.
The Algerian court also sentenced 28 others between two and 10 years for different offences related to Ben Ismail’s lynching.
